Here's a 2012 Subaru Outback 2.5i AWP in Ruby Red Pearl with 161k. Ready to go after our head gasket job, which consisted of new head gaskets, valve cover gaskets, spark plugs, and resurfacing the heads before putting everything back together. Also gave it a new torque converter, new front control arms & sway links, and new muffler. Changed the air filter, cleaned the throttle body & mass air flow sensor, replaced the O2 sensor, and resealed the thermostat.

It represents Subaru's 4th generation of Outbacks, named by Motortrend as the "SUV of the Year." Its maximum cargo capacity, with 34.3/71.3 cubic feet (back seats up/down) rivals other classic SUVs on the market. And as for legroom and headroom, it's just plain roomy. Try it out.

Its ground clearance of 8.7 inches makes it not only easy to get in and out of, but along with the all-wheel drive, makes it a great vehicle for all seasons, including Midwest winters.

Classy rims, wouldn't you say? 17" wheels with a set of 4 Phantom C-Sport all-season tires have plenty of tread depth remaining: 8/32" all around. (10/32" is new, and 2/32" means Replace Now.) (Splined lug nut tool included in the glove box.)

We installed a new front left brake caliper. Front brake pads are not far from new, with 8mm thickness (10mm is new for front pads). Rear pads are also in good shape, with 5-6mm thickness (8mm is new for rear pads).

--> Gave it our signature 300+ mile test, and it passed.

Automatic (CVT) transmission with optional manual mode and paddle shifters.

Its double wishbone rear suspension makes for a smoother ride.

Luggage roof rails with pivoting fold-away crossbars. Fog lights.

All-Weather Package (AWP) includes heated front seats, plus defrosting outside mirrors & windshield wiper de-icers which turn on when rear defrost button is pushed. Flip-down rear armrest and beverage holder. Rear seats recline as well as fold down for more cargo space. Retractable rear cargo cover.

The steering wheel has audio and cruise control buttons. An 1/8" aux jack is in the center console. There are 3 12v power outlets: in the front console, center console, and rear cargo area.

Has a hitch! (1 1/4" receiver.) Also a wiring harness for trailer lights.

A trip computer in the dashboard / instrument panel measures fuel economy: it got 30.3 mpg over 319 miles of highway driving and 28.2 mpg over 1293 miles of combined driving (see photos). Not bad for an AWD vehicle!

For stability and safety, Subaru's Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system monitors the direction of the car compared to the intended steering direction. It compensates by braking individual wheels and/or altering fuel flow to the engine. Also, the Traction Control System (TCS) senses if any wheels are skidding and redirects power only to those wheels having the best traction.

This model was a Top Safety Pick for 2012 by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It comes with six airbags (including side-curtain ones) as well as Brake Assist.

But of course this Outback has Subaru's signature All-Wheel Drive transmission!
