Here's a 2012 Subaru Outback 2.5i in Ice Silver Metallic: a reliable AWD ride with 182k miles and only 58k miles on the transmission, which we replaced. We also did a head gasket job, consisting of new head gaskets, valve cover gaskets, and resurfacing the heads before putting everything back together. New spark plugs.

Replaced all 4 brake rotors and the rear brake pads. Front pads are close to new, with 8mm thickness (10mm is new for front pads). Also replaced the muffler and exhaust pipe, a brake line, U-joint, and both rear wheel bearings.

Gave it our signature 300+ mile test, and it passed.

All-Weather Package includes heated front seats, plus defrosting outside mirrors & windshield wiper de-icers which turn on when rear defrost button is pushed.

Automatic transmission with optional manual mode and paddle shifters. Its double wishbone rear suspension makes for a smoother ride.

17" alloy wheels with a set of 4 Firestone Champion Fuel Fighter all-season tires have 7/32" tread remaining in front and 5/32" in back. (10/32" is new, and 2/32" means Replace Now.)

Fog lights. Luggage roof rails with pivoting fold-away crossbars.

Tilt and telescoping steering wheel. Flip-down rear armrest and beverage holder. Rear seats recline as well as fold down for more cargo space.

The steering wheel has audio and cruise control buttons. 1/8" aux jack in the center console.

There are 3 12v power outlets: in the front console, center console, and rear cargo area.

A trip computer is in the dashboard to monitor fuel economy: it's gotten 29.4 mpg over the last 300 miles (see photos). Not bad for an All-Wheel Drive vehicle!

Driver's seat height (adjustable) averages about 25" off the ground. Its ground clearance of 8.7 inches makes it not only easy to get in and out of, but along with the all-wheel drive, makes it a great vehicle for all seasons, including Midwest winters.

This represents Subaru's 4th generation of Outbacks, named by Motortrend as the "SUV of the Year." Its maximum cargo capacity, with 34.3/71.3 cubic feet (back seats up/down) rivals other classic SUVs on the market. And as for legroom and headroom, it's just plain roomy. Try it out.

For stability and safety, Subaru's Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) system monitors the direction of the car compared to the intended steering direction. It compensates by braking individual wheels and/or altering fuel flow to the engine. Also, the Traction Control System (TCS) senses if any wheels are skidding and redirects power only to those wheels having the best traction.

This model was a Top Safety Pick for 2012 by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. It comes with six airbags (including side-curtain ones) as well as Brake Assist.

Imperfections (see photos): dents in hood, upholstery pokes in center console, crack in edge of LH mirror, rust spot in RH rear doorjamb.

But of course this Outback has Subaru's signature All-Wheel Drive transmission!
